The following student positions are a part of IBM Canada's EPIC (Employment Pathways to Interns & Co-ops) Student Program. These positions are only open to students registered in a Canadian University or College program, who have completed a minimum of 2 years of their degree or diploma program, and who must be returning to full-time study upon the completion of the temporary IBM work term.
This Student Position resides in Ottawa and is a 4 month work term commencing September 2015
Main Responsibilities for J9 Virtual Machine Developer include:
We are looking for software developers who are enthusiastic about working at the language runtime level as part of the IBM Java Virtual Machine team. We are a driven team that works on many different technologies at once and has a high rate of innovation and delivery. Technologies that we build and influence includes garbage collection, interpretation, virtualization and platform exploitation, all in the context of virtual machines for interpreted languages. Our team members are enthusiastic, curious types that are interested in different languages and working with the internals at the runtime layer. We work on a variety of architectures (x86, POWER, z/Architecture, ARM) and operating systems (Linux, Windows, OS X, AIX, z/OS). Our work is part of the foundation of many of IBM's products and its strategic directions.
You should be comfortable in an environment that is predominantly C and C++ based, but you should also show proficiency and willingness to go down to the assembly language level. Polyglot skills are an asset, as we work in a variety of dynamic scripting languages. You will be expected to contribute to performance analysis and tuning, as well as work with our customer support teams to assist with problem determination and delivering fixes. We have a team environment where work and design is collaborative, but also where individuals are expected to operate with a level of autonomy and responsibility that leads to quality software practices and delivering business results.

Qualification:
- Experience with Windows and/or Linux operating systems
- Experience with C, C++, and/or Java
- Knowledge of assembly language programing
- Knowledge of the software development cycle
- Understanding of software engineering
- Demonstrates verbal and written communications skills
- Co-op or internship program enrollment an asset
