Position Description

We are currently recruiting for an Analyst or Associate to join our growing Natural Resources group in Private Investments in the Toronto Office. The individual will work alongside members of the team to evaluate new investment opportunities and assist with asset management and relationship development.

Role Specific Accountabilities

A) Analyze Natural Resources Investment Opportunities across the globe:

i) Review:

  • Build complex, dynamic financial models to analyze potential acquisition opportunities in the oil and gas space, including but not limited to upstream, midstream, refining and oilfield services transactions
  • Perform valuation analysis, including NAV, LBO, precedent transaction, and comparable company analysis
  • Support the deal team in working with third-party advisors to perform due diligence on opportunities including commercial (industry, competitive positioning, analysis of value drivers, etc.), financial, legal, tax, regulatory, environmental, insurance, benefits, etc.; The individual is expected to develop capabilities in leading discrete due diligence workstreams
  • Meet with company management and review past performance, strategy, outlook, regulatory and industry issues, and other relevant topics as required
  • Perform fundamental industry analysis on businesses being considered for investment

ii) Recommend:

  • Attend and participate in Natural Resources investment recommendation meetings
  • Assist in presenting investment recommendations to CPPIB investment committees

B) Execute:

  • Liaise with investment partners (other investors) and advisors (financial, legal, etc.)
  • Assist with the preparation of investment committee materials and support team members in transaction structuring, and legal documentation work
  • Assist with acquisition financing workstreams, including but not limited to review of credit documentation and financing term sheets
  • Work with other CPPIB departments to arrange funding and establish post-transaction monitoring processes

C) Monitor:

  • Assist in building relationships with portfolio company management teams
  • Assist CPPIB directors on portfolio company boards and management teams in executing on strategic plans and establishing best-in-class compensation and reporting practices
  • Assist management teams in evaluating acquisitions, significant capital projects and financing alternatives
  • Monitor ongoing financial and operational performance and coordinate with other CPPIB departments with respect to monitoring ongoing investments
  • Assist with the preparation of valuation reviews

D) Build the Team:

  • Train and mentor junior investment staff including new analysts and summer interns
  • Participate in and contribute to deal team, weekly department and investment recommendation meetings
  • Share knowledge
  • Help with recruiting activities including liaising with universities, networking and sourcing candidates
  • Proactively identify opportunities to improve Natural Resources and CPPIB processes/practices

Position Requirements

Must have:

  • 1 - 3 years related work experience (e.g. investment banking, consulting, private equity, business development, etc) in the energy industry
  • Excellent research, communication, financial modeling, analytical and valuation skills, including  experience evaluating and building NAV models
  • Strong track record of academic achievement and professional advancement
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong interest in investing
  • Desire to live in Toronto and willingness to travel

Other assets:

  • Comprehensive knowledge of the oil and gas sector
  • Technical background (petroleum engineering or geology) with some financial experience will be considered favourably
