Position Description

Reporting to the Managing Director, Head of Secondaries and Co-Investments, the Analyst plays a key role in making and managing principal secondary investments around the world, particularly in North America, Europe and Latin America. The Analyst assists deal teams in evaluating potential private equity secondaries and co-investment opportunities, conducting research, developing recommendations and participating in the execution of investments.

A) Analyze Investment Opportunities:

i) Review:

  • Research, analyze and evaluate secondary and co-investment opportunities
  • Build complex dynamic financial models to analyze investment opportunities (including testing assumptions and sensitivities)
  • Perform due diligence on secondary portfolios and co-investment opportunities; evaluating company dynamics, valuation and exit opportunities
  • Compile and analyze track record information for managers
  • Perform regular valuation analysis of private equity funds
  • Perform benchmarking analysis on secondary investments and co-investments
  • Meet with fund managers and review past performance, strategy, outlook, industry issues, and other relevant topics as required
  • Conduct reference calls with portfolio company management, Limited Partners and other industry participants
  • Apply "Total Portfolio Approach" as it applies to investments, including PME and analysis

ii) Recommend:

  • Under the supervision of the Associate, Senior Associate, Principal or Senior Principal, create Investment Recommendations outlining potential investment opportunities
  • Assist in presenting Investment Recommendations to the Investment Partnerships department and the Investment Department Decision Committee

B) Execute Secondaries and Co-Investments:

  • Manage discreet aspects of the execution of secondaries and co-investments as directed
  • Liaise with investment partners (other Limited Partners) and advisors (financial, legal, etc.) and other secondary syndicate participants
  • Assist in executing agreements and other transaction-related legal documentation
  • Assist in the marketing activities of CPPIB's secondary strategy to industry participants (GPs, LPs, captive private equity teams, etc.) including assisting in the development of marketing materials and strategies for implementation and dissemination by all members of the Funds, Secondaries & Co-Investments team

C) Monitor Private Equity Funds:

  • Review capital calls and distributions related to secondary investments
  • Coordinate with the Investment Finance groups with respect to monitoring of investments
  • Monitor ongoing financial performance of portfolio companies and secondary investments
  • Assist in performing valuation reviews of secondaries and co-investments
  • Attend annual meetings and advisory board meetings
  • Assist in building and leveraging relationships with Limited Partners and other industry participants
  • Identify and assist in the sourcing of opportunities for the Private Investments platform

D) Build the Team:

  • Participate in and contribute to weekly departmental meetings and investment recommendation meetings
  • Share information by coordinating and entering information into Investran for both existing and prospective investments
  • Assist in recruiting activities including liaising with universities, networking, sourcing candidates and interviewing prospective hires, as required
  • Assist with onboarding activities for new Investment Partnership department colleagues
  • Other relevant duties and projects as assigned

Position Requirements

  • 1-2 years experience in management consulting, investment banking, private equity or other relevant areas
  • CFA, CBV or CA designation is considered an asset
  • LLB or equivalent is considered an asset
  • Strong research, financial modeling, problem solving, analytical and valuation skills
  • Experience in conducting due diligence
  • Experience in the negotiation process
  • High degree of professionalism and integrity
  • Ability to think critically and creatively, and exercise good judgment
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Highly effective interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing priorities and new challenges
